Boca U23 Soccer Roundup
STAFF REPORT
The Jersey Shore Boca under-23 men’s soccer team had a good day on Sunday, stealing a pair of games on the afternoon in the Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase League.
The two victories allowed Boca to remain undefeated and stay atop the MSSL U23 men’s standings for the second straight week at 5-0-1.
In their opening game of the day against the host Jersey Knights, Danny Haydu ripped a free kick from 40 yards out that was deflected to Christian Pontier inside the 18-yard-box.
Pontier converted on the opportunity, giving Boca what turned out to be the game-winning goal and a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute.
Boca’s Jay Mancuso, a former Toms River North standout who leads the team with four goals, opened the scoring by capitalizing on a cross from George Gkionis in the 53rd minute.
Justin McGrath of Brick made sure that Boca wouldn’t have to work as hard in the second game, giving his team a pair of goals five minutes apart in the first half, en route to a 4-2 win over the AC Diablos.
Mark Schmiegel and Mancuso assisted on McGrath’s goals in the 22nd and 27th minutes, respectively.
Chris Konopka netted what turned out to be the game-winer off a feed from Schmiegel in the 51st minute.
Konopka doesn’t often get a chance to score as he is the normal goalkeeper for Boca, but a series of injuries and schedule conflicts led to his first tally of the season.
Mancuso’s second goal of the day put the proverbial nail in the coffin in the 65th minute, burying a cross from midfielder Versh Tivzenda in the 65th minute for a 4-2 lead.
