Niko Gkionis closed out his Belgian campaign over the weekend by hitting the back of the net twice as Excelsior Veldwezelt beat KSC Hasselt by a 3-1 scoreline.
“It was probably my best game and I have now scored five goals in the 11 games that I have played for my new club,” the New Jersey native told YA.
“I scored the two goals from the midfield. The first was a chip over the goalie and it was one of the better goals I have scored. I always work on chipping keepers in training and I finally pulled it off in the match.”
The midfielder, who’s contact is up with Excelsior, also divulged the success behind the second strike.
“The second was me getting on the end of a nice cross from our right back Ruben Corstjens,” he explained. “Our outside backs always put in dangerous crosses into the box, so my strategy is to crash the box as much as possible.”
With the joy of a win and scoring a pair of goals, the former Royal Liege man admitted that the team he signed with in January could have done better.
“Overall, we have had a difficult season, but no matter what position we are in, we said we are going to fight until the end and that is what we did,” Gkionis concluded.
Gkionis is expecting a contract extension with the Belgian third division team but for now plans to enjoy some free time with his family in Greece before getting back to the business of soccer.
