Curry-Edwards helps Delaware move in right direction

TOMS RIVER, NJ (December 8, 2006) – After spending two years sitting the bench as a virtual back-up at Old Dominion University, Jersey Shore Boca veteran goalkeeper Jon Curry-Edwards (Spring Lake Hgts) transferred to the University of Delaware this fall and has helped himself and the Fightin’ Blue Hen soccer program to a fresh start and a new lease on their respective soccer lives.

The Blue Hens finished the 2006 season with a record of 6-8-2 overall and 4-7-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association under first-year head coach and New Jersey native Ian Hennessy, posting their highest overall and league win totals since the 2001 season.

Hennessy’s six wins are the most ever by a first year head coach in the history of the Delaware men’s soccer program.

Curry-Edwards finished the 2006 season starting and playing in seven games for Hennessy’s squad, splitting time with sophomore Taylor Thames of Olney, MD.

He allowed 10 goals for a 1.54 GAA, made 42 saves and finished the year with a .808 save percentage and overall individual record of 1-4-0 recording his first ever collegiate win on Oct 15 by defeating Georgia State 3-1.

According to Hennessy, Curry-Edwards, who has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining, also brought some intangibles to the program.

“Jon did well for us this year. He has a terrific work-ethic and made some terrific saves for us this year in some key games. He is very much liked by the players and his demeanor off the field has been as important in creating a new culture here at a program that has struggled in the past. This year the program was one game shy of .500 which has only been achieved once in the last 20 years” mentioned Hennessy, a former Seton Hall University All-American.

“Jon is also a terrific student boasting one of the teams best GPA’s. All in all, he has been a super pick-up for us and I count myself lucky to have him” the Delaware coach concluded.

Curry-Edwards was a member of the Boca U23 team this past summer that advanced to the semi-finals of the USASA U23 Regional Championship as well as the semi-finals of the MSSL Cup Championship.

The Spring Lake Heights native and 2004 St. Rose High School graduate is also a long-time member of the Jersey Shore Boca youth program and played on Boca’s Super Y-League teams earlier in his career.

“I believe Jon really showed his all-around net worth at Delaware this year. He worked very hard this summer with our U23 team to get himself ready. I know he wanted to make a statement from his first day at practice. Jon was just looking for a fair chance and I believe he did not disappoint anyone. He has an outstanding teacher of the game in Ian Hennessy. I believe Jon has the makings of an exceptional goalkeeper given some time” mentioned Walt Konopka, a member of the Jersey Shore Boca Board of Directors who also coached the Boca U23 team for several years.

Jersey Shore Boca had over fifty club standouts who previously played for Boca on either their Men’s, Super Y-League, PDL, Club or Youth teams that participated in NCAA intercollegiate soccer this fall for their respective institutions either as players or coaches.

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.

The Club is celebrating their 28-year anniversary in 2006.
