OCEAN COUNTY – The Jersey Shore Boca summer soccer program continued in full swing with Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase League (MSSL) action at the John Patrick Sports Complex in Lakewood as the Boca U23 women defeated the Newark-based Den of Lions 4 to 1, picking-up their first win of the season while the Boca U20 men tied the Pittsgrove Griffins (NJ) 2 to 2 in their opening game of the day and then blasted MCCOM United of North Jersey 5 to 1 in the afternoon finale.
Jersey Shore Boca is participating in MSSL for the sixth consecutive year this summer as one of the league’s inaugural founding members.
MSSL is a regional summer soccer league, which is specifically designed for collegiate players under the age of 23 and is fully sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA), the national governing body for adult amateur soccer.
The Boca U23 women started-off the schedule of events and had little trouble dispatching the Newark-based Den of Lions 4 to 1 for their first win of the summer as Katie Minervini (Oceanport), Michele Canning (Wall), Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood) and Jen Tice (Barnegat) all tallied for the Blue and Gold.
Minervini, a former Shore Regional standout who played in 22 games for Montclair State University as a sophomore last year, started the Boca scoring in the 31st minute as she drove a solid ball from the right side 25 yards out which deflected into the goal off a Den of Lions defender.
Four minutes later, the Boca women tallied the eventual game winner when a pair of former Shore Conference players teamed-up.
Midfielder Kyra Janeczek, a senior at Wall Township HS, dribbled down the right side and sent a cross to Michelle Canning at the top of the box where the St. Rose standout finished with authority, drilling a low shot past the Den of Lions keeper inside the near post.
Cunliffe, a former College of New Jersey standout, and Tice, a two-time PSAC selection at Kutztown University, each added an insurance goal for Boca before full time.
Lauren Albrecht (Marlton), a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson in Florham, picked-up the win in goal collecting five saves.
The Boca U23 women improve to 1-2-0 on the season.
In their first match of the day, the Boca U20 men surrendered two second half goals against Pittsgrove but finished the match all even at 2 to 2.
Former Lakewood High School standout Jonn- David Gutierrez (Lakewood) got Boca on the board with a converted penalty kick in middle of the first stanza while Boca’s Dan O’Neil (Toms River) made the score 2 to 0 before the break.
Rowan University junior goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (Lakewood), who started 11 games for the Profs in 2008, was tested several times throughout the match and came up big for Boca with saving a penalty kick attempt late in the second half to preserve the tie for the U20s.
In the afternoon game, the Boca men easily handled MCCOM United of North Jersey rolling to a 5 to 1 victory with two goals from former Toms River North standout Ryan O’Donnell (Toms River) and single strikes by O’ Neil, Derrick Thompson-Sevcik and former Toms River East striker Bobby Wynn (Toms River), who is heading into his senior year at East Stroudsburg University.
Cunliffe picked-up the win between the pipes for Boca in the second game.
The Boca U20 men improve to 2-2-2 for the summer.
Walt Pericciouli (Berkeley Twp.), one of the original founders of the Jersey Shore Boca Soccer Club and recent inductee into the New Jersey Soccer Association Hall of Fame, coaches the Boca U20 men’s team while long-time local women’s soccer advocate Charlie Cunliffe (Lakewood) is in charge of the Boca U23 women’s team for a third straight year.
The Boca summer soccer program for the past several years has established itself as one of the most competitive and most recognized soccer environments in New Jersey for college age players to play and train over the spring and summer months.
