WEEKEND BELGIAN ACTION
Yanks Abroad
Michael Adubato – Monday, November 30, 2009
Niko Gkionis scores in a losing effort, while Laurent Manuel misses out as Oostende shares the points this past weekend in Ezqi League action.
Tienen 2 – 1 Royal Liege
New Jersey native Gkionis got his first start of the season and rewarded the club with an early road lead.
It wasn’t enough as the home team came back strong with goals from Jonas Bogaerts and Hannes Meeus before the half to hand the Walloons their third consecutive loss after a 1-1 tie against Beveren earlier in the month.
Having been on the bench or in the stands for most of the season, Gkionis took advantage of an early cross into the box and poked home his first goal of the season after just two minutes from six yards out.
The Liege defense were unable to keep the lead very long. Just 12 minutes later Bogaerts tied it up before defender Meeus turned goal-scorer, netting the eventual game winner in the 34th minute to break Liegeois hearts.
The loss keeps Gkionis and company rooted to the basement of the Exqi League with just a pair of games left before the holiday break. The team has scored just 11 times while collecting nine out of a possible 48 points.
Next up will be a home game against 15th place Renaix.
